Abstract:

Background/Context: The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) is the primary document used across most Canadian Road Agencies for the application and design of traffic signs, signals and pavement markings. Over the past two years, the MUTCDC has undergone a major revision. This paper will present a preview of what can be expected in the Sixth Edition, including the new sections on Safety Effects and Road Users (Human Factors), and the significant additions to the section on Warning Signs, which is primarily intended to address safety by warning drivers of upcoming roadway hazards.

Aims/Objectives: The objective of updating the MUTCDC was to enhance both the content and the format of the document. Specifically, greater context was provided so that practitioners could effectively use the guide with the aim of improving safety.

Methods/Targets: The target group of the MUTCDC is anyone involved in the design or operation of roads or traffic controls (such as signs, signals, markings and digital displays).

Results/Activities: Some of the specific revisions related to safety include the new sections on Safety Effects and Road Users (Human Factors). The significant updates to the section on Warning Signs include a new structure to clarify what signs 'must' be provided to protect public safety, detailed guidance on sign placement, and much more detailed guidance for curve warning signs and concealed intersection signs.

Discussion/Deliverables: The key output is the Sixth Edition of the MUTCDC, which will be released in late 2019. It will then be available for purchase and will have a great influence on the application and implementation of signs and other traffic control devices for years to come.
