Abstract:

Context
Road safety is disparate and multi-disciplinary and as such achieving significant and sustained progress depends on many partners working together.  In this spirit, the BC Road Safety Strategy, led by the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, is the culmination of work by over 30 organizations, both within and outside of government,and five working groups who contributed to it over a two year period.

The strategy contains the vision that British Columbia will have the safest roads in North America and will work toward the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities and zero serious injuries.  The strategy has been made available to the public and can be accessed at: http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/osmv/road-safety/road-safety-strategy.htm

Objectives
The objectives of the BC Road Safety Strategy are to:

    • Eliminate deaths and serious injuries from British Columbia’s roads – creating safe roads and healthy communities;
    • Support and promote road safety as an overall issue;
    • Ensure that road safety is communicated in a consistent language;
    • Promote the safe system approach to road safety and its consistent application;
    • Ensure that work is underway within each of the major pillars of the safe system (drivers, roads and vehicles); and
    • Promote British Columbia’s road safety interests at various other levels.

Target Group
The strategy (program) and its new governance structure, to be implemented starting in December 2013, are designed for partners who want to contribute to British Columbia’s first Vision Zero plan.

Activities
The strategies activities are centered on partners working together across a new and formal governance structure.

Deliverables

    • Increased efficiencies within the overall road safety community;
    • Road safety outputs that are complementary across partner groups;
    • The creation of improved information and tools to support road safety;
    • The creation of tools and mechanisms to support the road safety business including those related to research, data and best practice.
