Density growth in existing and new communities has created a need to re-evaluate the traditional school design toward one that can accommodate various modes of mobility to enhance safety.

The presentation will discuss the differences and benefits in urban school transportation design, showcasing a project where we applied an urban transportation design to a traditional school location. This will be accompanied with a discussion on the benefits of fostering multimodal relationships in students to enhance school zone safety and health. We will discuss how the planning and design of a school can be modified to support a multimodal environment.

Alycia is a professional engineer and mobility project manager at T.Y. Lin International with over 5 years’ experience in transportation engineering serving public and private sector clients across Canada. Through her consulting experience, Alycia has developed a focus in roadway safety, school zone planning, traffic operations, and active transportation that has allowed her to develop solutions that balance multi-modal user needs holistically. She has contributed safety expertise on significant projects including the City of Toronto’s PXO review, the Waverley Transit Hub Relocation Plan in Thunder Bay, and the Lakeview Village Master Plan School Transportation Operations Review in Mississauga, all of which involved a significant focus on pedestrian and active safety to foster multi-modal connections. Outside of work, Alycia also volunteers for the Engineer in Residence (EIR) program, raising awareness and promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in elementary schools.
