Abstract
Cycling is a healthy and environment-friendly form of recreation and transportation. However, many Manitobans are injured and killed every year while cycling. There are various risk factors for cycling injuries, including cycling at night without a light or reflector, cycling on roads without bike lanes, motorist inattention, and cyclist inattention. Many cycling injuries can be prevented by modifying the cyclist, the physical environment, or the social environment. Host prevention strategies include cyclist education, increasing cyclist visibility by motorists, and wearing a helmet. Physical environment prevention strategies consist of various ways of separating cyclists from traffic. Social environment prevention strategies comprise motorist education, increasing the number of cyclists, and legislation requiring helmet use. These prevention strategies and their implementation in Winnipeg and Manitoba will be discussed.
