Abstract
This systematic review summarizes the evidence about the effect of ignition interlock programs on recidivism and collision rates of offenders convicted for driving-while impaired by alcohol (DWI). Based on the evidence collected in 17 evaluations, ignition interlock programs are effective in preventing DWI. Programs including educational and treatment programs do not perform better than programs solely relying on the interlock device. Once the device is removed from the vehicle, recidivism rates are similar among interlock and non-interlock offenders. Additional studies are needed to identify components that could be added to actual interlock programs in order to produce long-lasting effects.
