Abstract

The City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety conducted a pilot project to test the effectiveness of driver speed display boards on residential and collector roads in Edmonton. The pilot, which was initiated in response to community concerns about speeding on non-arterial roads, deployed a temporary driver speed display board and a data logger in a series of pre-treatment to treatment comparison studies over the course of fourteen months. Analysis of the data indicated that in a majority of cases, average vehicle speed decreased, though the magnitude of the decrease varied widely. Analysis of a treatment site against a control also showed a speed reduction. Analysis was undertaken to estimate the longevity of the initial speed reduction. The resulting information from the pilot project will be used to determine operating parameters rollout as part of a speed management continuum for Edmonton neighbourhoods.
