Abstract
RSMCs deliver mail from their vehicles to mailboxes at the side of the road. These roads are rural or suburban, two- or four-lane roadways, with posted speeds varying from 40 to 80 km/h with varied (unknown) traffic volumes. Canada Post Corporation decided to assess the traffic safety of their RSMCs and the drivers of the general public with whom they interact. An in-depth study resulted in the development of a unique and efficient tool to assess the traffic safety for RSMCs, and passing road users, at each mailbox. The tool, based on a human factors approach, allows for a practical and objective assessment of safety to be completed at each mailbox across Canada or any other network with such mail delivery system.
