Abstract

U.S. government researchers have used detailed field accident data and statistical models to support the thesis that in single vehicle rollover crashes, increased roof intrusion increases the probability of more severe head, neck or face injuries due to roof contact. Other researchers, using a similar data set or a totally different one, have presented either complementary or contrary evidence concerning this claim. Here, meta-analysis is used to compare three U.S. government studies to five non-government studies. The analysis demonstrates the consequences of using different research methodologies and databases. The results show where the eight research studies complement each other and where they diverge.
