Distracted Driving this month’s SGI Traffic Safety Spotlight

SGI’s Traffic Safety Spotlight for this month is focused on distracted driving.

Police will be looking out for drivers using their cell phone while driving or distracted in other ways.

SGI Spokesman Tyler McMurchy says getting caught using, manipulating, or viewing a cell phone or driving without due care and attention can be costly, as a first offence is a $580 dollar fine and four demerits.

Bid to reduce Eugenia speed limits fails

An effort to reduce speed limits and add stop signs in the area of Eugenia where a pedestrian was killed and three more were struck by a vehicle last month was defeated at the Grey Highlands council table.

At council’s meeting on Aug. 3, coun. Dane Nielsen brought forward a resolution to immediately reduce the speed limit to 40 km/hr on Inkerman, Canrobert and Pellisier Streets and make the intersection of Canrobert and Inkerman a four-way stop and the intersection of Inkerman and Pellisier (a T-intersection) an all-way stop. Nielsen’s resolution also called for staff to prepare a report about conducting a pedestrian safety study for the entire municipality.

Distracted driving causing one in five collision-related injuries – report

As part of its Traffic Safety Spotlight for August, Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has released an advisory on distracted driving and how dangerous it is to the province’s drivers.

According to SGI, an average of 780 people in Saskatchewan were injured each year in collisions over the past five years (2017-2021) due to driver distraction and inattention. This comes out to about one in five auto vehicle injuries, the Crown insurer said.

Halifax Regional Police release impaired driving statistics for July

August 09, 2022, Halifax Regional Police (HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA)

Halifax Regional Police charged 25 drivers with impaired related offences during the month of July.

Of the 25 drivers, 19 were charged with impaired operation of a conveyance by alcohol, and six drivers were issued a driving suspension for operating a conveyance while having consumed alcohol. Of the drivers who provided breath samples, officers were able to detect a wide range of blood alcohol concentrations (80 to 220 mg %) with 10 drivers being at least twice the legal limit. Three of the drivers refused to provide a breath sample and were charged with the offence of refusal.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, called for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) action to address child deaths due to frontovers. Recent demonstrations by investigative reporters have shown blind zones in front of some cars to be as big as 16 feet, obstructing children from view and putting them at risk of being run over.

Short of DTR, Dawson Road safety options limited: report

A review of potential safety improvements on Dawson Road has returned few meaningful options short of adopting a Designated Truck Route.

A report from city staff concluded the stretch of Dawson Road within city limits has seen lower than average collisions for Ontario roadways in the past decade, but indicated tractor trailers play an outsize role in those that do occur.

Hamilton councillors approve various road safety initiatives

August 10, 2022, Global News (HAMILTON, ONTARIO)

The public works committee on Wednesday approved plans for two cameras, which will rotate throughout four locations on Main and King Streets.

The cameras will monitor Main Street from Dundurn Street to Queen Street and from Gage Avenue to King Street, and King Street from Gage Avenue to Lottridge Street and Locke Street to Dundurn Street.

Joint Commercial Enforcement Initiative – “Operation Nuts and Bolts”

On August 16th, 2022, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Town of Lincoln partnered for a joint enforcement initiative dubbed “Operation Nuts and Bolts.”

In response to community concern involving increased commercial motor vehicle traffic in Lincoln and West Lincoln, the focus of this initiative was to identify commercial vehicles intentionally bypassing the Vineland Inspection Station and to conduct in-depth vehicular inspections to ensure compliance with road safety standards, as legislated by the Province of Ontario.

Education & municipal involvement is key to the success of micromobility integration in Canadian communities

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) has released, Road Safety Monitor 2021: Micromobility in Canada, with sponsorship from Beer Canada and Desjardins and with support from Neuron Canada. This is the first year TIRF included questions related to micromobility and the use of personal mobility devices (PMDs) in its annual Road Safety Monitor (RSM) survey. This fact sheet summarizes evidence from previously published studies and incorporates data from TIRF’s RSM poll. The benefits associated with the use of micromobility options are described along with specific risks related to riding location, time of day, distraction, and helmet use.

ICBC kicks off two road safety initiatives

To coincide with the start of September, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has launched two road safety initiatives.

ICBC will be coordinating with provincial police for a month-long education and enforcement campaign on the dangers of distracted driving.
