Abstract:

Having medical and emergency contact data on your helmet means every time you strap on your helmet you are visibly made aware of the risks inherent with that mode of transportation and the necessity for safety; complacency is the enemy!

Having medical and emergency contact information on your helmet can save lives and reduce complications arising at triage and treatment. This in turn reduces the burden on all stakeholders when accidents occur including; family, work, insurance, community and more.

'Access to patient medical data is crucial for Paramedics in the first few moments of a medical or trauma emergency. A Medical Data Carrier is simple and makes this information readily available.'Chris Hood, President of the Paramedic Association of Canada

'A Medical Data Carrier is a simple and very effective means for anyone to provide 911 and EMS with very crucial information. In addition to the medical information, the emergency contact and medical plan information enables first responders to notify and provide medical administration with relevant information at the most crucial time,' Kelly Nash,

Executive Director of The Paramedic Chiefs of Canada. Initiate a safety program based upon Medical Data Carriers being given to citizens who utilize transportation that requires wearing a helmet and specifically where that mode of transportation use of the public roads or paths that interface with roads.

There will be three primary goals:
1. Achieve a greater overall, meaningful and ongoing safety awareness when it comes to 'two- wheeled transport' including; users, the motoring public and public in general.
2. Save lives! Provide EMS with a universal go to location and platform to assist them with a more efficient and effective triage and treatment.
3. Make our young and vulnerable citizens more safety and emergency prepared by 'growing them up' with a helmet and Medical Data Carrier solution AND providing them with a solution that speaks for them when they cannot. All

CARSP members, cyclist and motorcyclists, cycling and motorcycling safety organizations, relevant associations , community and corporate stakeholders, EMS and First Responders, Insurance Industry and more. Partner with one Canadian city to take on board this safety program initiative. Ideally this city would have already gathered accident and injury metrics for one or more past years pertaining to cycling and motorcycling. Conduct outreach to the corporate community to financially support the campaign with top sponsors getting branding on the Medical Data Carrier. City Safe Roads organization and EMS to hand out Medical Data Carriers at safety awareness events, through school safety programs, at City Hall and other appropriate venues or event opportunities. 12 -24 month safety initiative with results to be released that include;

1. Number of Medical Data Carriers given out
2. New statistical data for accidents involving cyclists and motorcyclists by number of incidents, severity and injuries sustained etc.
3. Number of accidents where Medical Data Carriers were utilized by good Samaritans, EMS, receiving hospitals as part of the care process.
