Abstract

Injuries are the leading cause of death for Albertans aged between 1 to 44 years. For those under the age of 34 it is motor vehicle related deaths. Transportation related injury and fatality rates in Alberta have consistently been among the highest in the country. Alberta Transportation estimates that driver distraction / error contributed to more than 90% of traffic crashes. Distractions due to cellphone use while driving is believed to be one of the major reasons behind increased risk of injuries and collisions. The need existed to develop a coalition to heighten awareness of this dangerous driving practice.
