Supporting Vision Zero using Video-Based Surrogate Road Safety Techniques

Last year the City of Bellevue in Washington, the Together for Safer Roads (TSR) coalition, and Transoft Solutions partnered on a first-of-its kind, citywide analysis of traffic camera video with the goal of improving safety for all road users. On December 9th Franz Loewenherz, Principal Transportation Planner for the City of Bellevue and Lana Samara, Project Delivery Manager from Transoft Solutions will share their collaborative efforts in applying cutting edge technologies for safer roads. In particular, this webinar will describe applications of artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies for network-wide conflict analysis using the City of Bellevue’s existing traffic camera infrastructure in an effort to proactively eliminate collisions and get to Vision Zero faster. Franz Loewenherz works for the City of Bellevue where he is a Principal Transportation Planner. In this role he leads Bellevue’s Vision Zero and Pedestrian and Bicycle Implementation Initiatives, transit partnerships including arterial HOV and alternative service delivery projects, and technology development partnerships with both the public and private sectors. Franz received his master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Washington and has more than 25 years of transportation sector experience.


Lana Samara, Project Delivery Manager, Transportation Safety. Lana holds has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from McGill University, specializing in Transportation Engineering. Lana works closely with public and private agencies around the world to define project scopes and to ensure results are delivered accurately and on time. Lana has managed many deployments with road agencies, DOTs and consulting firms globally.
