Post-conference workshop

Overview

CARSP | ACPSER

Parachute

Vision Zero is a road safety initiative that was developed in Sweden and can be summarized in one sentence: No loss of life is acceptable. The road system that keeps us moving everyday should be designed to protect us when we make mistakes. Numerous cities across the world, including many in Canada have adopted Vision Zero or are in the process of developing their own strategic plans to create thriving, healthy, and safe communities.

Join CARSP and Parachute in this full-day interactive Vision Zero workshop to hear from experts and champions active in Vision Zero and Safe Systems approaches in Canada. The first part of the workshop will be aimed at understanding the concepts and interpretations of Vision Zero and provide an overview of best practices and challenges from active and emerging Vision Zero municipalities in Canada. The second part of the workshop will be focused on putting Vision Zero into action, and will include a short field visit to see how data is used in Vision Zero interventions in Calgary. Participants will engage in hands-on design challenges and partnership and collaboration discussions. Participants will leave ready to consider action plans to create safer roads and reduce the number of road fatalities and injuries in their communities.

Objectives

  1. For all stakeholders to have a clear understanding of what Vision Zero (VZ) means, and how to communicate it.
  2. For stakeholders to start to think about how a Vision Zero road safety strategy could be developed, using approaches such as the Safe System.
  3. To understand the different building blocks of a strategy including: data; built environment (including land use and mode choice); collaboration and partnerships; communications, evaluation, governance and funding.
  4. Explore options as to how communities of all sizes and settings can work together towards a common goal of eliminating road injury.
