CARSP Student Paper Competition and NEW! Student Poster Competition

This year we are offering three ways students can showcase their work on a road safety topic, and potentially earn cash prizes, free registration and travel allowances.

In addition to the CARSP’s Student Paper Competition, now in its 16th year, we are also offering a CARSP Vehicle Safety Enhancement Special Award, due to the growing need for studies on this topic, and lastly, we are bringing back the Student Poster Competition!

Participants must be registered in a Canadian university or college and must be a lead author of their work (first OR second author) with the exception of the CARSP Student Paper Award where they must be the first author.

Below is a brief description of each competition. While students are invited to participate in all competitions, each original work can be presented in no more than one option, however, non-winning papers of the Special Award will automatically be considered for the Student Paper Competition. This will be facilitated by the fact that the Special Award will be judged first, and the Student Paper Competition will be judged second. While the judging of these two competitions occurs before the conference, the Student Poster Competition, however, will be judged at the conference.

The Student Paper competition requires that students produce their paper on any road safety topic using a strict list of requirements. The paper writing requirements used are those stipulated for submitting papers to the CARSP Conference itself. While it is more work than submitting to the Poster Competition, the pay-off is also greater.  Here are the benefits of submitting to this option:

  • Opportunity to write a paper and receive feedback from experts in the same field
  • Opportunity to present your work in front of an audience of road safety professionals
  • Opportunity to win cash prizes:
    • $1000 for first place
    • $600 for second place
    • $400 for third place
  • Opportunity to win a travel allowance ($1,000 each for all top prizes)
  • Opportunity to win free registration for the entire conference, including all sessions, events and specialty meals such as the Networking and Awards Banquet.  This is also given to the two runners up (4th and 5th place).

While it is more work than submitting to the Poster Competition, the pay-off is also greater.  Here are the benefits of submitting to this option:

  • Opportunity to present your work in front of an audience of road safety professionals

The Student Poster Competition requires that students complete an abstract outlining the content for their poster. Abstracts that get accepted are invited to come to the conference and the posters are judged at that time.  This option is intended to help introduce the author to conferences.  It is an opportunity to showcase your work, without taking too much time to produce.  The benefits of this option are as follows:

  • Opportunity to discuss your work with road safety professionals
  • Opportunity to win cash prizes:
    • $500 for first place
    • $350 for second place
    • $150 for third place
  • ALL accepted abstracts receive free day registration for the Youth Forum All-Day Event to take place at the Joint 2020 Conference on Thursday, June 18th.  The posters will be displayed, judged and prizes will be awarded sometime during the Youth Forum All-Day Event.
